Belcourt Castle Sells for Undisclosed Amount

659 Bellevue, Newport, Rhode Island, United States, 02840

Carolyn Rafaelian announced Monday that she had purchased Newport’s largest privately owned mansion, Belcourt Castle.  Rafaelian is the owner of the jewelry company Alex and Ani.  The mansion was previously owned by Harle Tinney and had been in the Tinney family since 1956 when they had purchased it for $25,000.  Belcourt Castle was designed by Richard Morris Hunt and completed in 1894 for Oliver Belmont.  It’s said to have cost $3 million to construct and includes 60 rooms in 50,000 square feet.

The new owner, Rafaelian, told Providence Journal, “I have a love affair with Newport. I’ve fallen completely in love with Belcourt,” Rafaelian said. “I am fascinated by its rich history and roots, and it’s a true honor to have the blessing from Mrs. Tinney to continue the legacy. I look forward to restoring it to its natural beauty.”  After the restoration is complete, Rafaelian is going to rename the estate ‘Belcourt of Newport’ and continue using it for tours, weddings, and charitable events.
