Devastating Fire Ravages $50M Gilded Age Mansion on NY’s Fifth Avenue

854 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York, United States

Update: The New York Fire Department tweeted that the fire was accidental and caused by faulty electrical wiring. A devastating fire ravaged a century old Gilded Age mansion on New York’s Fifth Avenue last night. It’s reported the blaze started on the third floor shortly after 8:00 pm and was under control shortly before 10:00 pm. At least four people, including three firefighters, were transported to hospital. The 32 room Beaux Arts mansion was designed by the same architects as the Grand Central Station and built in 1905 for New York stockbroker Robert Livingston Beeckman. At the time of the fire it was on the market for $50,000,000. According to the Daily Mail, the original construction cost was $60,000 and it sold in 1925 to Emily Thorn Vanderbilt Sloane White and her husband Henry White for $450,000. The property changed hands again following Emily’s death in 1946, the Republic of Yugoslavia reportedly purchased it for $300,000. The 20,000 square foot mansion remained mostly untouched with preserved original Gilded Age details by master artisans of the early 20th century. There were nine floors of living space with ten rooms directly facing Central Park. The New York Post reported that the building’s first two floors contained antiques from the Gilded era, but were spared as the fire was contained to the third floor. The fire is currently under investigation. The property hit the market for the first time in over 70 years in April 2017 for $50,000,000 with Douglas Elliman.
