On Set with HGTV’s Million Dollar Rooms

Photos by Colin Jewall

For two days Pricey Pads was on set with HGTV’s Million Dollar Rooms at this impressive 17,000 square foot contemporary mansion in Kelowna, BC.  Canadian architect David Tyrell worked with the owners for years creating the perfect design for this family home.  The home is one of only a handful private residences in an extremely secluded waterfront gated community.  Million Dollar Rooms had set out to film the breathtaking entryway as the ‘Million Dollar Room.’  It was really interesting to see all the work & time it takes to create a 5-10 minute segment on the show.

Forty feet in height, 3 storey brick & stucco walls, an impressive glass railed staircase, and a very unique outrigger canoe suspended in the middle of the room as the centrepiece.  Directly above the canoe is a very large circular glass skylight, and above that is a shallow swimming pool on the main level of the home.  While Colin Jewall’s photos are extremely impressive, take my word for it that photos don’t do this place justice.

Being an avid car & motorcycle collector the owner decided to construct something you don’t see everyday.  The two-storey garage serves as a focal point of the front of the home.  Two large translucent glass doors on the first & second levels open to expose what’s hiding inside.  A $70,000 car elevator is used to transport vehicles from the first to the second level.  When this episode airs you’ll see Carter Oosterhouse and the owner riding the elevator up to the second level.

The home was designed to take full advantage of the views over Okanagan Lake and they succeeded.  The fourth level of the this marvel is as grand as it is impressive.  The open concept space combines the living, dining, and gourmet kitchen into one room lined with floor to ceiling glass walls.  Tapered wood columns can be found inside and on the upper terrace which support large overhangs and add interesting character.  Also on this level is the master suite.

There is no lack of cabinet or counter space in this kitchen.  The kitchen cabinets were custom made in Italy and are made of glass.  Beyond the glass walls of the main level is an impressive outdoor space complete with infinity edge swimming pool, waterways, firepit, and inviting sitting areas.  The infinity edge pool blends in seamlessly to Okanagan Lake creating an optical illusion.

The crew of Million Dollar Rooms were amazing!  Carter Oosterhouse is a natural on camera and a lot of fun off camera.  The homeowner’s were so down to earth and made our time at their home a lot of fun!
