1915 Villa Virginia ‘Berkshire Cottage’ Sells for $6.75M in Stockbridge, MA

Over one-hundred years ago, the nation’s wealthiest families constructed extravagant summer cottages in Massachusetts, these lavish mansions became known as the Berkshire Cottages. Approximately seventy-five estates were built in Lenox and Stockbridge and many of them have either been torn down or repurposed. William H. Clarke commissioned architects Hiss and Weekes in 1914-15 to design and build a Mediterranean Renaissance Revival mansion which would be known as Villa Virginia. The design is rumoured to be a replica of an Italian villa in the Sabine Hills of Italy. The landscape was designed by Ferruccio Vitale and included a lily pond, grotto and walled garden. The property was also a working farm with several outbuildings devoted to animals and farm machinery. By the 1970s, the 12,253 square foot residence was uninhabited and severely run down. From 1979 to 1998 it was the home and private gallery of artist Kazys Varnelis who extensively restored the structure and grounds. 

Villa Virginia is one of the last great Berkshire Cottages to be built in Stockbridge and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Listing agent Patrice Melluzzo told Mansion Global that 95% of the house is original with upgrades such as new electric, a new slate roof and a new kitchen. Interior features include a curving marble staircase, a spacious library with two fireplaces and bookcases on three walls, original French doors, a large loggia with tile floors and painted vaulted ceiling and a main salon showcasing a coffered ceiling and oversized imported fireplace. The 58 acre estate also includes a free standing 5,000 square foot carriage barn/guest house with three horse stalls, tack room and four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a full kitchen, dining room, two fireplaces, roof top deck and a tower room. Villa Virginia was on the market for $8.5 million with Pat Melluzzo of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty.
