A remarkable regency-style mansion with art deco influences on a private 4.39 acre estate in Atlanta, Georgia’s upscale Buckhead neighbourhood is on the market for $8,990,000. The 7,401 square foot residence was designed by architect Philip Trammell Shutze in 1937 for Mrs. Ben T. Smith. Elizabeth Dupree Lynch and husband, Dr. William W. Helvie, purchased the home in 1997, making them the fourth owners. The couple embarked on an extensive restoration of the property with some projects taking nearly 20 years to complete. Lynch told Modern Luxury that they were extremely fortunate to have access to Shutze’s original blueprints with specifications. She says the pool and tented pool pavilion were designed using Shutze’s blueprints and are located exactly where he had envisioned them. They also used limestone from Shutze’s preferred quarry for use on exterior decks and the swimming pool. The natural flow of the main level is perfect for entertaining with large formal living and dining rooms, while the professional kitchen is a modern update for the family cook. There are four bedrooms and five bathrooms on the second level and a total of seven bathrooms throughout. The third floor is playful and nautical with a bar from the SS Noramdie and doors opening to an expansive roof deck overlooking the expansive property. Elizabeth and William’s restoration of the home was a labour of love. They told Modern Luxury, “It has been a real honor to be given temporary guardianship of this magnificent house and gardens over the last two decades and to restore her into an even more beautiful home.” It’s on the market for $8,990,000 with The Bayne Group.
