Berwyn, Pennsylvania, United States

Philadelphia-based architectural firm Archer & Buchanan Architecture, Ltd. has a diverse portfolio of work ranging from brand new estate properties, additions & renovations and even historic home restorations. Their work is nationally recognized and has been the recipient of various designs awards since as early as 1996. We’re familiar with most of their work and nothing comes close to the uniqueness of their Arts & Crafts-inspired project in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. The 11,172 square foot residence was built within the confines of a demolished 19th century country house on an 11.24 acre property. According to Archer & Buchanan, the new Arts & Crafts-inspired residence is designed to minimize site disturbance and cultivate a sense of timelessness within the landscape. Every square foot has been designed to perfection utilizing the work of the region’s most talented artisans and craftsmen, creating truly one-of-a-kind design elements such as millwork, art glass, plaster, masonry and ironwork. There are eight bedrooms, five full and three half bathrooms throughout, a spectacular grand staircase, beamed living room and a unique formal dining room with curved wall of windows. Archer & Buchanan also designed a timber framed and masonry garage in 2002 for the owner’s collection of fine automobiles. The structure isn’t the only unique thing on the property, Archer & Buchanan also designed a Cor-Ten Cattails fence surrounding the 11 acre property. Originally conceived as a yard sculpture, the 300, 8 foot above-grade Cor-Ten steel blades are set 8 inches apart and weave throughout the front yard in a serpentine layout. It’s just one more unique aspect of this remarkable estate.
