Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda have reportedly purchased one of the largest oceanfront homes in Del Mar, California for $43 million as first reported by The Wall Street Journal. The 5,800 square foot residence was owned by Madeleine Pickens, former wife of Texas billionaire T. Boone Pickens, who listed the property in January for $48 million. Designed by architect Ken Ronchetti and built in 1999, the home includes 6 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms on a 0.40 acre lot with 120′ of oceanfront. Bill Gates primary residence spans more than 60,000 square feet and occupies a substantial waterfront on Lake Washington in Medina, Washington. GeekWire reported that the couple previously spent $18 million buying a 229 acre thoroughbred training centre in Rancho Santa Fe. It was announced in March that Bill would be stepping down from the Microsoft board to focus on philanthropy. He and his wife founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, it’s reportedly the largest private foundation in the world with $46.8 billion in assets.
