Billionaire Craig McCaw Selling $75 Million Private Island

James Island, Sidney, British Columbia, Canada

Cell phone billionaire Craig McCaw has just listed his private island off the coast of Sidney, BC for $75 million.  James Island is the second largest privately owned island within the Gulf Islands with 780 acres.  Craig McCaw is the founder of Clearwire Corporation, and McCaw Cellular, which is now part of AT&T Mobility.  The listing description notes, “Steeped in a rich and documented history, the island has had several lives: from agricultural settlement; to an industrial plant and company town; to its present incarnation as an exclusive retreat and a return to much of its natural state.”  Craig reportedly purchased the island in 1994 for $26 million and spent 18 years transforming it into what we see today.  Features of the island include an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, a 5,000 square foot owner’s residence, 6 guest cottages, private docks, airstrip, pool house, manager’s residence, and a western village.  Sotheby’s Canada listing agents Mark Lester & Alan Johnson are representing the seller.
