Originally built as a summer cottage for George Lorillard Ronalds, the nearly 10,000 square foot residence, known as Turtle Point, remains as grand and striking on its elevated position overlooking Tuxedo Lake as the day it was built. Ronalds commissioned architect Bruce Price
to design the residence on a 2.9 acre waterfront property. Price used natural materials from the area as part of the home’s unique architecture with substantial stone walls and Tudor elements on the front facade. According to Brownstoner, Tuxedo Park was developed in the 1880s as a retreat for wealthy folks from New York City, with many of the homes designed by architects such as McKim, Mead & White, Heins & LaFarge, Bruce Price and Delano & Aldrich. Most of these substantial waterfront homes served as second homes or cottages. Turtle Point sits on a 2.9 acre peninsula with over 1,200-feet of shoreline, two private docks, a boat house, two bedroom guest house and century old specimen trees and other plantings. Brownstoner reported that the historic property was owned by comedian Whoopi Goldberg from 1998 to 2005, and while the interiors have seen some modern upgrades, there is still plenty of original character. Some of the highlights of the interior include 100-year-old leaded glass windows, custom wood panelling, hardwood flooring and intricate hand-carved mantels on all nine wood-burning fireplaces. Additional features include a substantial living room with 27-foot ceilings, a large formal dining room and lovely covered stone terraces. The lower level includes an indoor pool and spa. There are six bedrooms and eight bathrooms throughout. Following Ronalds death, a real estate ad from 1912 described the residence as “Ronalds Cottage” and as having a spacious garage, summer house, ice-house, boat-house, garden and shade trees. The property was being offered at public auction with the option to purchase the furnishings. Property records reveal the property selling for as much as $10.15 million in 1998 and being listed in early-2018 for $7.1 million. Turtle Point is currently on the market for $5.95 million with Tux Park Towne & Country. Cover photo: Jill Swirbul Photography.
