Coastal Shingle Style Residence by Carpenter & MacNeille
Manchester-By-The-Sea, Massachusetts, United States
Architectural firm Carpenter & MacNeille drastically transformed a seaside property into what may be one of Manchester-By-The-Sea’s most alluring residences. According to the firm, the custom shingle style home was designed to look as though it had evolved from the original 1873 stick style cottage on the site. The result is a dramatic structure with the characteristic and architectural detail that would suggest it had always been there. It’s known as Oakledge and was designed to seamlessly incorporate the best 21st century technology, including geothermal and solar mechanical systems and modern construction materials and techniques. An Article in the June – July 2016 Ocean Home magazine revealed that much of the foundation of the original 1873 cottage had been retained and an entire wing that was added in 1896 evolved into the home’s current living room. The interiors are sophisticated yet warm and inviting for family life on the water and include an elegant entry hall, mahogany panelled study, a gourmet kitchen and a sumptuous ocean facing porch complete with pizza oven and fireplace. Property records note that the home spans a little more than 6,700 square feet to include eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms. It sits on a 1.59 acre rock outcropping overlooking Manchester Bay complete with seaside swimming pool and a variety of outdoor entertaining and dining options.
