A historic Greek Revival mansion with roots dating back to c.1846 is on the market in Mobile, Alabama for the first time in nearly 60 years. Palmetto Hall, located in the heart of Spring Hill, was built by John Dawson as a replica of his family home on the Battery in Charleston. In January 2017, the home’s private collection of Jay and Nan Altmayer, featuring 225 lots of classical European furnishings and decorative objects was sent to auction with Christie’s in New York. The total sale brought in over $4 million – including a c.1750  mahogany bookcase for nearly $60,000 and a Richard Clague painting for $1,600,000. Jay Altmayer’s son, Jay Altmayer Jr. says he is planning to distribute the money to local charities to ensure the money will stay in Mobile for good causes. The historic Palmetto Hall first hit the market in November 2017 for $3.2 million and was recently reduced to $2.8 million. Marvel at over 8,500 square feet of beautifully restored space with extensive formal rooms, a sweeping staircase and 5 bedrooms & 7 bathrooms. In the wood panelled living room, the heavily carved over-doors and over mantel millwork date back to c.1760 with a mantel dating back to c.1780. Around 1960, New Orleans architect, Myrlin McCullough, helped the owners update the house for modern living and expanded the footprint of the house. The 3.84 acre property is filled with gorgeous trees and very mature estate sized Camellias and other lovely plantings providing a feeling of calmness and serenity. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a beautifully maintained and restored Greek Revival mansion. It’s on the market for $2.8 million with LLB & B Real Estate.
