Set behind private mahogany gates and a maple tree-lined, perennial-bordered drive is this exceptional architectural estate. Austin Patterson Disston Architects designed the nearly 8,000 square foot English Arts & Crafts manor in Westport for interior designer Joan Nemirow. The L-shaped house, sitting on former farmland overlooking fields and terraces sloping down to a pool, is on the market for $6.5 million. Westport Magazine revealed that builder Michael Greenberg found the couple the 2.6 acre lot and Austin Patterson Disston Architects worked with Joan’s company, Joan Nemirow Designs, to design the home. Exterior architecture was inspired by Art & Crafts design with stucco panels, heavy timber, thin stone and red brick.

While the entire residence is spectacular, perhaps the most interesting space is the custom kitchen. “I didn’t want a true greenhouse because I knew it would be very hot, and I didn’t want to be preparing meals and cooking in that heat,” Joan told Traditional Home, “But I was intrigued with the idea of a space within a space, and that’s how the greenhouse ceiling evolved.” The space includes details such as a 6 foot wide La Cornue range, a barrel arched glass ceiling and a 5 foot x 10 foot central island made of walnut and burled walnut veneers. The project was the recipient of two awards, AIA/CT Alice Washburn Award 2011 and Kitchen: 2010 A-List Award Winner: Kitchen AtHome Magazine. The grounds include a Michael Greenberg designed and built cabana with Samuel Heath shower and tennis viewing area, an outdoor fireplace, limestone patios and a 16 foot x 20 foot organic garden.
