Winfield Hall, a historic Italian Renaissance-style mansion designed by architect C. P. H. Gilbert and built for Frank Winfield Woolworth, is heading to auction on July 12, 2021 with Max Spann Real Estate & Auction Company. According to the listing, the property is guaranteed to sell at or above $7 million. Built in 1916 following a mysterious fire that destroyed the previous mansion, Winfield Hall extends more than 48,000 square feet with 12 bedrooms and 9.5 bathrooms on a 16.4 acre property known as the Woolworth Estate. It’s reported that the residence cost upwards of $9 million to build in 1916 with the grand staircase costing $2 million on it own. After the Woolworths moved on, the house sat empty for years, and was purchased in 1929 by the wife of Richard S. Reynolds, of the R.S. Reynolds Metal Company fame. After her tenure, the house became the Grace Downs Academy, a business school for young ladies, then in 1978 was purchased by Martin T. Carey, brother to former Governor Hugh Carey of New York.
In 2015, a quick moving fire fire broke out on the first floor and spread to the second floor destroying irreplaceable items in its path. CBS News reported that up to 100 firefighters from 8 towns responded to the blaze which lasted 90 minutes. According to a recent listing, “The last 40 years have seen the property transition from residential uses to more commercial uses such as an educational facility, corporate headquarters, conference center, office and laboratory.” The residence is an extremely desirable location for film, commercial and print shoots. The buyer has a unique opportunity to rehabilitate the existing Gilded Age Mansion into a state-of-the art luxury residence/retreat or unique commercial enterprise. There is also an auxiliary clock tower building extending 15,000 square feet that has had varied uses including staff residences. Winfield Hall was previously on the market for as much as $19.95 million.
