American architect David Adler may be best known for his work in Chicago and the surrounding area, however with over 200 buildings to his name, he did occasionally stray from the Windy City. Adler designed this sprawling country house in 1915 for Benjamin and Hazel Nields. Today, the 7,450 square foot residence sits on a manicured 2.12 acre property within close proximity to town. The residence has seen various updates through the years, however Adler’s vision survives with many great details still seen throughout. There is a welcoming formal entry with checkerboard marble floor and staircase with iron railing, a large great room with original panelling, mantel and towering French doors leading to the rear terrace and a charming garden room with views over the gardens. As lovely as most of the residence is, there is room for upgrades. The kitchen is large, bright and surely has plenty of cupboard space, but it really is lacking the charm that can be seen throughout the rest of the house. There are a total of seven bedrooms, five full and two partial bathrooms throughout. According to Brownstoner, the master suite’s original sleeping porch has been turned into an ensuite bathroom. The grounds are spectacular with a terraced rear yard, large swimming pool and formal gardens. 145 Milton Road is on the market for $6.49 million with Sotheby’s International Realty.
