Shelter Island, New York, United States
New Canaan, Connecticut-based architectural firm Brooks and Falotico were commissioned to expand not only the property but an existing mansion originally designed by architects McKim, Mead and White. The firm raised the three-storey residence, moved it and dug a full basement with 11-foot ceilings. Accompanying the main house and located just across the street is a new guest house with easy access to a deep-water dock. According to the firm’s project page, “The house, which has three bedrooms and outdoor spaces for entertaining, is actually where the family spends most of their time, using the main house as more of a guest house.” Also on the property is a charming stone garage, various other outbuildings and a new glass pavilion in the garden that is used as a gym. Architect Brooks and Falotico worked with interior designer Naoko Kondo and builder Hobbs, Inc. on the project. Photography by Tria Giovan.
