Inside a 1896 Victorian Mansion with Unusually Bold Interiors
SOLD | Built 1896 | 5,994 Sq. Ft. | 7 Beds | 6 Baths | 0.4 Acres
Bronxville, New York, United States
While doing research on another property we came across this 127-year-old Victorian mansion in Bronxville, New York. The nearly 6,000 square foot shingled home was designed by architect William Bates and built in 1896. While the architecture, including turrets and stone columned porches, is impressive on its own, it was actually the bold interiors that set the property apart. The residence hasn’t been on the market since it sold for $3.25 million in 2017. Prior to that, it had been listed since 2015 for as much as $4.15 million. At the time of the listing, Looney Listing revealed that the agent actually addressed the unusual interiors, “Two very different artists live in this house; one does caricatures and collects historically significant bronze animal sculptures, the other creates wildly colorful installations, sculptures and paintings, which are spread all over the interior…walls, floors, cabinets and ceilings. Their South African heritage, together with items brought back from travels to India, Mexico, Ethiopia, Mali, Burkina Faso and Morocco blend into eclectic, international interiors.” Scroll down and let the pictures speak for themselves.

An old listing description: “One of Lawrence Park Hilltop’s most distinguished houses was designed by William Bates in 1896. The house is built around a 3 story stone and stucco tower with a defining cone shaped roof. The master BR in the tower has a domed ceiling as does the top floor of the second tower. The foyer overlooks a large sunken great room with double height ceiling, window seats and a large wood-panelled fireplace. Bates’ design features a half dozen window styles (a Palladian window towers over the staircase landing), 17th century style balusters, bracketed eaves, Juliet balconies and fanciful designs on the shingle work. This 7 BR family house with 5 fireplaces has had only 2 owners in the last 50 years. With a large outdoor patio and side yards, proximity to Wellington Circle where children play and just three blocks from the school playground and athletic facilities, this is a wonderful place to raise a family. The Hilltop has the most active neighbourhood association in Bronxville.” Photography found on agent’s former listing.
