SOLD | Built 1934 | 8,379 Sq. Ft. | 6 Beds | 7 Baths | 16.88 Acres
It’s been two years since Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi moved on from their breathtaking historic villa in Santa Barbara and into their new home in Montecito. The celebrity couple purchased the historic property in 2013 for $26.5 million. Business Insider reported that under DeGeneres and de Rossi’s ownership, the couple purchased two adjacent properties, extending the estate to 16.88 acres. They built an entertainment pavilion, known as Jordan Hall, added a sunken tennis court as well as a swimming pool. Perched on a crest with views of the ocean, harbour, and mountains, the secluded estate includes an 8,379 square foot Italian-style villa designed by celebrated architect Wallace Frost in the 1930s.
Impeccable attention was paid to every detail with a classic barrel-tiled roof, terra-cotta surfaces, wide wood flooring planks, rustic exposed ceiling beams, 18th century Italian tiles, vintage light fixtures and sturdy walls of locally quarried stone. Highlights include relaxing stone terraces, a cantina and exquisite landscaping with walking trails. DeGeneres and de Rossi owned the estate for four years before listing it in March 2017 for $45 million. The property sold the following year. At the time of the sale, a spokesperson at Sotheby’s told Business Insider, “Between ‘The Ellen Show,’ Ellen’s new home collection and a new business that Portia is starting, they can’t make it to Santa Barbara as often as they would like.” It was revealed that the celebrity couple sold the 16.88 acre estate to Netflix executive Ted Sarandos for $34 million – $11 million below the original asking price in 2017. The couple still managed to make off with a $7.5 million profit. “It feels ancient, like it’s been there forever. Like that hill was never without the house. This is a home that honours nature, and I love that,” DeGeneres said in a press release. According to Business Insider, there is a Roman column dating from 200 B.C. at the bottom of the lawn. Ellen and Portia currently live in a $27M mansion in Montecito.
