American actor John Travolta has put his 48 acre summer retreat on Islesboro Island on the market for $5 million in Maine. The 67-year-old shared the historic property with his late wife, actress Kelly Preston, who according to Mansion Global, purchased it in 1991 shortly after their marriage. Designed by architects Peabody and Stearns and built in 1903, the 20-bedroom home enjoys views over Penobscot Bay and the Atlantic Ocean with a deep water dock on Sabbathday Harbor. Architectural Digest published the home in May 1999, revealing that the couple purchased the residence as a place to entertain their extended family of 50+ members. Designer Christopher B. Boshears was commissioned by the couple to, “bring to life the feeling of an English country house,” according to Architectural Digest, who ultimately, “combined linen draperies, damasks and velvet upholstery fabrics with a variety of furnishings.” Travolta told Architectural Digest in 1999, “Fortunately, the house was already full of English antiques, thirty percent of which we refurbished and still use.” The 10,830 square foot residence is privately set at the north end of Islesboro Island and includes an unusual mix of Tudor Revival elements mixed with shingle style architecture.

The 48.13 acre property, which is partially in conservation with the Islesboro Island Trust, includes wonderful open fields with ocean views, walking paths through the woods down to the shorefront, beach and open ocean access, garden areas and a majestic approach up a tree covered winding gravel road. The house is perfectly designed to accommodate large groups of friends and family, but cozy enough for single family living. There are great entertaining spaces including a large fieldstone fireplace in the living room, a fantastic custom built bar area, a great dining room with a fireplace, a large and well equipped kitchen with a walk in refrigerator and fabulous pantry area. There is also an office and laundry room on the first floor. The second floor features the master bedroom suite with its own private sun porch and full bathroom with a claw foot tub and separate shower, as well as 14 additional bedrooms and 4 additional full bathrooms.
