Historic Crocker Mansion Modelled After England’s Bramshill House Relists in NJ
Mahwah, New Jersey, United States, 07430
It’s been described by Christie’s International Real Estate as being one of the world’s most magnificent and rare estates. Known as Darlington and Crocker Mansion, the brick residence was modelled after the Jacobean Bramshill House in England and built between 1902 – 1907 for George Crocker, son of railroad magnate Charles Crocker. Crocker died in 1909 and banker, Emerson McMillin, lived in the mansion until his death in 1922. Originally occupying an immense 1,100 acre estate with greenhouses, barns, stables, a dairy and gatehouse, today, the 50,000 square foot manor sits on more than 12 acres of marvellous grounds framed by the Ramapo Mountains with sweeping views of the surrounding grounds and hillsides. According to 6sqft, the property is currently owned by Ilija Pavlovic, who purchased it in 2008 for $8.8 million before embarking on a renovation lasting seven years, bringing the substantial residence into the 21st Century all while preserving the original architectural details and precious materials. The renovation of the mansion was performed by a unique team of architects, designers, craftsmen and local artists. Some highlights of the home include detailed hand-carved woodwork throughout, a great hall with a 30-foot-high ceiling and 1906 Aeolian Player Pipe Organ, one of, if not the only one, in the United States, a library with a 15-foot-high ceiling painted by muralist James Wall Finn, a his-and-her master bedroom wing, as well as a formal dining room, formal tea room and restaurant-style kitchen. The 58-room, three-story mansion is listed with both the National Register of Historic Places and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. The architect of the mansion was James Brite, who along with his partner, Henry Bacon, also created the original Madison Square Garden, American University in Washington, D.C., and the world-famous Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Crocker Mansion is available as price upon request with Christie’s International Real Estate.
