Shingle Estate on the Hudson By Mackin Architects

Garrison, New York, United States

Accomplished architectural firm Mackin Architects worked with the property owners to create this charming family home on a 100 acre estate in Garrison, New York. He describes the home as being, “Shingle Style, with a touch of Colonial Revival symmetry and porch detailing. It is subtle yet majestic, with 11-foot-high ceilings and deep wraparound porches.” Every aspect of this new home would suggest it was built at the turn of the century, from the charming entry hall with fireplace to the comfortable panelled library. In fact, the home’s period design is modelled after the original 1908 home on the sprawling 100 acre estate. Architectural Digest covered the property in a multi-page spread of their July 2010 issue and revealed the homeowner’s original intention was to restore, renovate and expand the original historic home. Ultimately, they decided to build new, nearly double the size, on another area of the property with views toward the Hudson. The result is a casually elegant family home with rooms seamlessly flowing into one another while still providing a sense of intimacy. The original home on the property was kept as a guest cottage. Interior design was handled by Campion Platt. Photography by Scott Frances, Architectural Digest.
