Southport, Connecticut-based architect Mark P. Finlay has designed several custom homes on South Carolina’s Kiawah Island, a barrier island known for its spacious villas, beaches and acclaimed golf courses. One of the firm’s 15,000 square foot projects sold in 2016 for $14.15 million and another, a nearly 8,000 square foot shingle style home, recently hit the market for $7 million and is currently labelled as pending sale. Sprawling across a rare double lot with a little more than an acre of land, the firm designed the home with a one-room deep linear plan, oriented to the surrounding landscape to provide 180-degree views of protected marshlands. There is a wide entrance hall with gracious staircase and unobstructed views of the marsh, a screened porch with stone fireplace and a double-height great room with two fireplaces and walls of windows. The large gourmet kitchen features a butcher block island and fireplace while a formal dining room includes a bay of eight windows overlooking the marsh. Mark P. Finlay’s project page revealed, “The owners, a retired couple, do most of their living on the first floor where adaptable plan incorporates pocket doors to create a transparency between the rooms.” The 8,000 square foot plan includes 5 bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms, a second floor library, catwalk with balconies overlooking the great room and a unique tower resembling a light house built into the rear facade. A brick courtyard separates the main house from a two-storey guest house over a two-car garage. This unique Kiawah Island property is on the market for $7 million with Pam Harrington Exclusives.
