Take a Step Back in Time: Cold Springs Farm, 18th Century Farmhouse Reimagined by Period Architecture Ltd.

Malvern, Pennsylvania, United States

A lovely 18th century English-style farmhouse in Malvern, Pennsylvania has been brought back to life after an extensive reimagination and extension by Period Architecture Ltd. Originally a three-bay colonial farmhouse, Period Architecture added two additional bays, evolving the floor-plan into a “U” shape wrapping around an entry courtyard with stone walls and formal gardens. Prior to the expansion, the home had been neglected for many decades. Many 21st century conveniences were added during the extension, including a period inspired state-of-the-art kitchen, home automation system, and a luxurious master suite, which bring modern sophistication to this historic home. Salvaged timber beams, twenty-inch-thick stone walls, custom wrought-iron hardware and light fixtures are among the details that achieve authenticity to the period. To accommodate the home’s extension, a large sycamore tree had to come down, it was carved into a life-size bear that now stands guard at the home’s entry. The desire for this home to endure the ages is evident in the material choices; stone walls, steel and concrete floors, and brick cornices while keeping the home’s traditional heritage with reclaimed wide plank floors, antique brick pavers, salvaged timber frame and rustic ironwork. This is a fantastic example of how to successfully honour a historic home while bringing it into the 21st century. Photography by Angle Eye Photography and Eric Roth. This property is not on the market.
