The 142-Year History of Burlington, Wisconsin’s Irreplaceable Meinhardt Mansion

Burlington, Wisconsin, United States

For 142 years, the Anthony and Elisa Meinhardt House at 201 S Kane Street stood as an irreplaceable beacon of architectural history in Burlington, Wisconsin. While the property tragically met its end in a fire late last year, its legacy as one of the region’s most significant historic residences remains a powerful chapter in Wisconsin’s past. The Meinhardt Mansion, a designated National Register property, was constructed in 1882 of native limestone. It was a quintessential example of the Victorian Romantic Era’s Queen Anne style, characterized by its irregular plan, elaborate surface decoration, and asymmetrical massing.

The home’s distinction came from its architect, Edward Townsend Mix & Co., a prominent Milwaukee firm known for designing major institutional and residential projects across the state, including the Soldiers’ Home in Milwaukee and Villa Louis in Prairie du Chien. Architectural details included cobblestone wall surfaces, segmentally arched windows, and a prominent square corner turret topped by a steeply pitched pyramidal roof. The history of 201 S Kane Street is inextricably tied to the success of its founding family. Anthony Meinhardt, a grocer and postmaster, commissioned the house. He went on to found the Meinhardt Bank in 1891.

The 5,200 square-foot residence originally sat on an impressive 15-acre property that included gardens, an orchard, and a pine grove, professionally landscaped by Dennis Buettner. Inside, the home featured six bedrooms, four fireplaces, intricate ornate woodwork, and an elegant staircase. Notably, the magnificent foyer featured parquet flooring that was placed by Samuel Curtis Johnson, founder of Johnson Wax. Furthermore, the mansion held a unique place in local technological history: it was the site of the first telephone installed in Burlington, which connected the residence directly to Anthony Meinhardt’s bank downtown. A defining characteristic of the Meinhardt Mansion was its longevity and stability.

It was “lovingly cared for by only three families” across its 142-year existence. The Meinhardt family maintained occupancy until the death of Antoinette Meinhardt Fulton in 1967. In 1914, a notable architectural change was implemented: the original front porch was replaced with a larger porte-cochere (a covered entrance) built of matching limestone, designed by the respected Racine architects Guilbert & Funston. The residence was sold in July 2024. On Friday, November 22, 2024, the historic landmark was destroyed by a catastrophic fire, the cause of which was later determined to be the negligent handling of burning material by the new owner, marking the end of one of the region’s most significant Queen Anne properties.
