The King Estate

5501 Elgin Street, Highland Park, Pennsylvania, United States, 15206

The King Estate was built in 1880 by immigrant glass manufacturer Alexander King, and is located in the Highland Park neighbourhood of Pittsburgh.  It was built to replace the former home of General James S. Negley which was lost to fire.  Following Alexander’s death, his son Rober Burns King added castle-like features to the home.  The estate became public property from the time of Robert’s death in 1954.

After years of neglect the City of Pittsburgh sold it to Dr. Frank Brown & wife Maura Brown in 1994.  The couple reportedly paid $150,000 for the damaged home and had plans to fully restore it.  Eighteen years later the home is back to its former glory and up for sale.  Under the ownership of the Brown family, the house has won several restoration & preservation awards and is currently protected under the city’s historic landmark status.
