When it hit the market at the beginning of 2019 for $40 million, the J.W. McConnell mansion was crowned the most expensive private home in all of Quebec. The historic property still holds that title even after a substantial $10 million price reduction. The history of the property dates to 1913 when Jeffrey Hale Burland commissioned architect David Jerome Spence to design a substantial residence on the south side of Mount Royal. Plans were cut short and construction stopped in 1914 following Burland’s death. Construction did not resume until 1924 when Canadian businessman and newspaper publisher John Wilson McConnell purchased the unfinished estate. McConnell enlisted architects Charles Platt and Kenneth Guscotte Rea to enlarge and finish the mansion. It is believed to be the only home outside of the United States designed by architect Charles Platt.
Sotheby’s International Realty Canada agent Joseph Montanaro told the Montreal Gazette, “The fireplace mantles and some of the woodwork and a lot of other finishing materials in the house were taken from three or four Italian villas and then brought by boat and used to finish the interior of the house.” According to The Official Site of Mont-Royal, McConnell lived in the mansion until his death in 1963. The site also revealed that around 1975, the McConnell Foundation ceded the house to the Benedictine Community of Montreal, at which time a monastery was established. It was sold in the early 2000s and was turned back into a private residence. The current owners spent over 10 years lovingly restoring the historic mansion while incorporating modern conveniences such as geothermal heating, central air and garage space for six vehicles. There are a total of 12 bedrooms, 8 full and 4 partial bathrooms. The 1.89 acre estate is one of only a few remaining historic properties in Montreal’s Golden Square Mile and includes lush gardens and water features. The J.W. McConnell Mansion is currently on the market for $30 million CAD with Liza Kaufman & Alfee Kaufman of Sotheby’s International Realty Canada.
