Turkey Farm, A 38 Acre Estate with 17,000 Sq. Ft. Home in Cedar Rapids, IA by Akar ARchiTecture
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States
Set on a private 38 acre estate in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, this sprawling 17,000 square foot modern home was designed to entertain large charitable fundraisers, sponsored orchestral events and business functions for up to 250 people inside as well as out. The home was designed by Akar ARchiTecture for John M. Smith, Chairman of CRST International, one of the largest trucking companies in the USA. Akar ARchiTecture notes that, “the house is a collection of gabled pavilions with each housing its own programmatic function and linked to a central spine. Public pavilions march along the entry side carving up and defining a terraced formal entry courtyard with the main garage and pool area reaching out to enclose it. Private pavilions overlook the pond and woods becoming two stories as the grade falls to the lower level outdoor amphitheatre, defining a series of terraces and smaller private courtyards.” Anamosa Limestone was used throughout the project, having been quarried just 30 miles from the homesite. While the home is not on the market, you can take a tour below. To learn more about this project, please visit Akar ARchiTecture.
